Abstract
Ceramic coatings established on a valve and piston of an internal combustion engine were studied. Numerical investigations have been performed with the use of a FEM-based software. For the needs of investigations in a microscale, the micromechanical model has been developed. The coating in this model is considered as a functionally graded material with properties changing smoothly accordingly to a linear function. There have been also studied two kinds of three-layered ceramic coatings: first one was based on Al2O3 (valve) and second one on ZrO2 (piston).
