Abstract
Simple expressions are derived for relativistic sum rules. These expressions involve an expansion in powers of the potential energy of the target electrons, but the series is found to be rapidly convergent with the zeroth order term yielding extremely accurate results even for highly relativistic systems. The effects of relativity on these sum rules are explained in terms of the Zitterbewegung of the electrons.
