Abstract
Global characteristics of spectra (average energy, variance, skewness, total line strength, total transition probability) are useful for the approximate description and interpretation of HCI spectra. These characteristics enable to analyse the complex cascades of elementary processes following the production of a vacancy in inner electronic shell of atom, and to calculate the final charge distribution of ions as well as resulting emission or electronic spectra. Using only several main global characteristics, the envelope of HCI spectrum can be obtained. Variation of these characteristics in the isoionic or isoelectronic sequences reveals the general regularities of spectra. These applications are illustrated by several examples.
