Abstract
The influence of temperature on the electronic stopping cross-section for ions in metal foils suffering ferro-paramagnetic phase transition was analysed theoretically within the Bethe theory of stopping combined with the Stoner model for band ferromagnetism. The increase in the cross-section at the Curie temperature was found to depend on energy band shift and on the number of electrons carrying through magnetic interaction. The calculations were compared with experimental data for the slowing down of protons in Ni foil and it was shown that the measured ca.2% increase in cross-section can be approximately explained within the presented model.
