Abstract
The physics of viscous and elastic magnetic filaments is considered. It is shown that the normal stresses arising due to the magnetic torques cause very interesting peculiarities in the dynamics of the filaments in rotating fields; the formation and the propagation of the shock wave of a tangent angle, development of S like steady shapes if the frequency is beyond the critical and other. Elastic magnetic filaments due to the buckling instability have hairpin shapes. The models developed are applied for the description of the magnetosomes in the magnetotactic bacteria.
