Abstract
The influence of exchange coupling distributions on the recording performance of perpendicular media is investigated. It is found that the grain-size distribution has a much larger influence than variations in interfacial coupling. Furthermore, it is shown that, provided the head field gradient is sufficiently large, the intrinsic “magnetic cluster size” is not a limiting factor in the recording performance.
