Abstract
The effect of a strong magnetic field H||[0Â 0Â 1] on magnetic properties of the Jahn-Teller compound TbVO4 is studied. The destruction of quadrupole ordering as a phase transition induced by a magnetic field and the high-field crossing of low-lying energy levels (crossover) are predicted. The Zeeman effect, magnetization curves, magnetic susceptibility and magnetocaloric effect are calculated on the basis of the Hamiltonian including the crystal field, quadrupole and Zeeman terms. Magnetic anomalies associated with the quadrupole ordering destruction and crossover are considered for the isothermal and adiabatic regimes. The field misorientation effect is discussed.
