Abstract
A phytochemical investigation on Medicago sativa L. led to the isolation of 13 compounds including three benzofuran neolignans (1-3), five flavonoids (4-8), three phenols (9-11), and two alkaloids (12 and 13). Their structures were established through extensive spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS and Circular Dichroism spectrum) and comparison with literature data. Compounds 1-3, 11 and 12 were reported for the first time from the genus Medicago and the family Leguminosae. The chemotaxonomic significance of the isolated compounds was discussed.
