Abstract
This profile focuses on the problems and issues that have emerged in Tirana, capital of Albania, during the transformation to a market economy in the post-communist period (1990-present). It addresses physical, economic, social, and environmental challenges related to its exceptional growth and complete transformation during this time, with an emphasis on physical design patterns. This account is preceded by a discussion of the city’s development since its origins at the turn of the last century.
