Abstract
The last few years have seen the emergence of a number of in vitro culture systems that mimic the early stages of mammalian development. Each of these systems can be used to study specific aspects of symmetry breaking and pattern formation during early mammalian development. Here we review and compare these systems. We also highlight the potential of this emerging field of engineering self-organization to understand the early stages of human development.
