Abstract
Ludwik Gundlach (1882-1941) was born to pastor Rudolf Gundlach and his wife, Wanda, née Manitius. In 1910 he graduated from the University of WrocÅaw. In the years 1910-1913 he was working as a resident in Anna Maria Hospital for Children in Åódź. During World War I he was active in municipal health department of Åódź and became a city physician. He was involved in organizing Polish Military Organization in Åódź. From 1916 he was assistant head of department of internal diseases in Anna Maria Hospital for Children. He was responsible for the crucial decisions concerning patients' treatment in the hospital, when the head of the hospital was not available. He was a pioneer of sulphonamide therapy. During World War II doctor L. Gundlach was treating Polish and Jewish patients. He refused to sign Volksliste. He died of a heart attack. In 1914 L. Gundlach married Julia Henryka Nietz (1888-1935). Julia worked as a nurse in Anna Maria Hospital. One of her duties was maintenance of the first in Anna Maria Hospital X-ray unit. It was probably the cause of neoplasmatic disease she died of. As a physiotherapist she used to create an atmosphere of fun in her work with children. Julia Gundlachowa was also active in organizing Polish Military Organization in Åódź and in numerous charity organizations. Their son, WÅadysÅaw Rudolf, became an eminent professor of Technical University of Åódź. His wife, Zofia née Pszenicka, was the head of former Anna Maria Hospital in the years 1959-1978.
