Abstract

This article describes and discusses the results of a case study illustrating the interaction between university–industry–government, with specific reference to the University of Coimbra, Portugal. This example is examined in the context of a knowledge-based economy. The main aim is to incorporate the knowledge already acquired, in an effort to show how a triple helix model explains, clearly and usefully, how the part played by the University of Coimbra has been effective in promoting a regional dynamic of innovation and entrepreneurship. Analysis of this case confirms the relevance of a triple helix model in understanding reality in a straightforward and practical manner. It was noted that the interaction and alliances established tended to form a mesh of emerging communications, networks and organizations, which in our case are expressed in the creation of tri-lateral networks and hybrid organizations. Finally, the crucial role of the University is highlighted, as the promoter and driving force for the multiplicity of networks and relations established.
