Abstract
⺠We describe the concept of whole cell arrays, the next step in biosensor technology. ⺠Live sensor cell arrays sense and report multiple biological effects in real time. ⺠The molecular engineering of array members is discussed. ⺠We review advances in cell deposition, patterning, immobilization and preservation. ⺠Trends in biochip miniaturization lead towards future dense single-cell arrays.
