Abstract
⺠Cellular heterogeneity arises from stochastic gene expression. ⺠Reporter assays and mathematical modelling can quantify transcriptional bursts. ⺠Photoswitchable fluorescent proteins can further the understanding of stochasticity. ⺠Near infrared fluorescent proteins can lead to advances in medical imaging.
