Abstract
With the onset of extended open sky policies, incumbent airline alliances on long-haul routes are set to face stiff competition from emerging low-cost carriers. The question considered here is whether this market will succumb to the low-cost model or will quality of service provide adequate levels of differentiation to sustain competition. The paper analyses the service quality of EU and US members of the main airline alliances.
