► We validate a teacher-report scale of task-avoidant behavior. ► The scale comprises one content factor and one method factor. ► The scale shows strict measurement invariance over time. ► The scale shows satisfactory convergent and discriminant validity. ► The scale score is negatively related to performance in both reading and mathematics.
