Abstract
⺠Relations between performance, metacognitive and classroom factors were examined. ⺠Known common factors-intelligence, sex and school fees-were controlled. ⺠Mastery GO and self-efficacy with teacher predicted metacognitive beliefs. ⺠Students with stronger metacognitive beliefs self-handicap less. ⺠Self-handicapping had a negative relationship with academic performance.
