Abstract
► Relations between performance, metacognitive and classroom factors were examined. ► Known common factors-intelligence, sex and school fees-were controlled. ► Mastery GO and self-efficacy with teacher predicted metacognitive beliefs. ► Students with stronger metacognitive beliefs self-handicap less. ► Self-handicapping had a negative relationship with academic performance.
