Solution behavior and solid phase transitions of quaternary ammonium surfactants with head groups decorated by hydroxyl groups

► Surfactant aggregation in aqueous solution is promoted by increasing the number of hydrogen bonds. ► The self-assembly is affected by head group chemical structure. ► Less ordered mesophases are preferred with the number increasing hydroxyl groups in the surfactant head group.
