► A novel theoretical model to estimate shell-thickness in core-shell quantum dots. ► Superposition of Quantum Confinement Energy (SQCE) between core and shell. ► Model here applied and validated for CdSe-CdS and CdSe-ZnS systems. ► Estimates from SQCE model are experimentally validated with TEM and SAXS. ► Model applicable to other type-I core-shell quantum dots also.
