Abstract
⺠Pre-play face-to-face communication increases cooperation in ultimatum bargaining. ⺠Restricted communication is used to study the source of communication effects. ⺠Eliminating strategic content does not affect proposer behavior. ⺠I find that responder behavior is sensitive to the communication protocol. ⺠I conclude that different processes mediate communication effects on bargaining behavior under different protocols.
