Abstract
► Pre-play face-to-face communication increases cooperation in ultimatum bargaining. ► Restricted communication is used to study the source of communication effects. ► Eliminating strategic content does not affect proposer behavior. ► I find that responder behavior is sensitive to the communication protocol. ► I conclude that different processes mediate communication effects on bargaining behavior under different protocols.
