► The effect of priming network expectations on group identification was examined. ► Attachment anxiety was associated with negative network expectations. ► Attachment anxiety and group identification were negatively associated under threat. ► When primed, only attachment anxiety (not threat) predicted group identification. ► Primed participants high in attachment anxiety disidentified with their group.
