► Investment perspectives conceptualize interests as driving forces in knowledge acquisition. ► Low SES provides fewer opportunities to actively pursue learning experiences. ► We examined SES-interest-knowledge relations in a sample of adolescents. ► Interests did not substantially mediate SES-knowledge relations. ► SES positively moderated interest-knowledge associations across multiple domains.
