Abstract
⺠Counterfactual thinking (CFT) is the mental simulation of alternatives to reality. ⺠CFT functions to regulate mood and support planning for future action. ⺠Results show that fantasy proneness predicts generation of counterfactual thoughts. ⺠This effect is independent of negative mood state. ⺠Results suggest individual differences in CFT activation.
