► Odor evoked autobiographical memories (OEAMs) were cued by odors and words. ► Both cue modalities activated areas associated with autobiographical memory and olfaction. ► Odor cues activated regions linked with vividness and emotion more than word cues. ► Word cues triggered more prefrontal and odor cues more temporal areas.
