► Context is more influential in IB given its complexity and multi-dimensionality. ► Emergent case selection highlights context's uniqueness but is neglected in IB. ► We explicate tools which contribute towards identification of dynamic case boundaries. ► Context matters for sampling (case selection) purposes, too. ► We call for context-shaped case selection processes in IB.
