► A proposed firm export market oriented (EMO) behavior model was empirically tested. ► Factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used for data analysis. ► A great set of antecedents and moderators were examined in the context of China. ► The proposed model accounts for 78.3% of variance in EMO behavior.
