Abstract
⺠Sustainability problems result from recurrent destabilization, overshoot and collapse of societal value orientations. ⺠Sustainability is lost as soon as societal value orientations become too much one sided and lose mutual cohesion. ⺠A sustainable society maintains balance between material versus immaterial and between individualist versus collectivist value orientations. ⺠The circular domain of balanced values constitute both the integral worldview, 'human dignity' and a new ethical framework. ⺠Sustainability policies should recognize and compensate the known and predictable mechanisms, that destabilize balanced value orientations.
