Abstract
⺠Different railway power supply system technologies are compared. ⺠The advantages of feeding railways with converters are reviewed and explained. ⺠These advantages are mainly technical, but also environmental and economical. ⺠Converters are especially beneficial for heavy loads hauled through rural areas. ⺠Main advantages are symmetric loading, interconnection, and controllability.
