Abstract
⺠Formation of silica aerogel begins with the gellation of a sol. ⺠Gold nanoparticles aggregate when added to a normally-prepared sol. ⺠Aggregation is prevented by a new two-step method. ⺠The resulting aerogel has close-to-ideal optical properties.
