Abstract
⺠The surface of silica nanowires was investigated with sub-nm resolution. ⺠Nanowires have surface anomalies with crater-like defects. ⺠Defects have size of tens of nm and depths of few nm. ⺠Removal of these defects could provide extraordinary mechanical/optical properties.
