Abstract
Neutrons induced by nuclear absorption of negative muons can be used to distinguish between high-Z and low-Z materials via the Z4 dependence of the muon interaction rate in matter. The potential of such neutrons for monitoring the carbon liner thickness in steel industry blast furnaces using cosmic-ray muons is explored.
