Abstract

- We identified and synthesised two naphthylproprionitriles in male oriental locust's sex organs.
- Both chemicals bind chemosensory protein 91, but not other proteins of the same family.
- Similarity with phenylacetonitrile, a desert locust's pheromone, suggests analogous functions.
