► Phosphorylation protected C/EBPβ from μ-calpain-mediated proteolysis in vitro. ► Phosphorylation mimic C/EBPβ was insensitive to calpain accelerator and inhibitor. ► Phosphorylation on Thr188 contributed more to the stabilization of C/EBPβ.
