Abstract
⺠Metabolism by intestinal microflora in arbutin-induced toxicity was investigated. ⺠Intestinal microflora is capable of metabolizing arbutin to hydroquinone (HQ). ⺠HQ could decrease cell viability, produce ROS, and induce apoptosis. ⺠Intestinal microflora may be critical for activation of toxic metabolites.
