Abstract
⺠We use MD and DSC to examine the effects of xenon on lipid membranes. ⺠Xenon atoms preferentially localize in the hydrophobic core of the lipid bilayer. ⺠Xenon induces substantial structural changes in the lipid bilayers. ⺠Xenon depresses the membrane gel-liquid crystalline phase transition temperature. ⺠Our results are consistent with a lipid bilayer-mediated mechanism of anesthesia.
