Abstract
⺠The ability of a known iron exporter, namely ferroportin, to transport manganese was examined in Xenopus laevis oocytes. ⺠Ferroportin had no affect on Mn uptake into the oocytes, but markedly enhanced Mn export. ⺠Mn export was concentration dependent, and inhibited by some divalent metals, low extracellular pH, and a high K+ medium. ⺠The results indicate that Mn is a substrate for ferroportin, and that this transporter may contribute to Mn homeostasis.
