► Pex1p and Pex6p are type-II AAA-proteins with a conserved second AAA-domain. ► Pex1p and Pex6p are crucial for peroxisomal matrix protein import. ► Pex1p and Pex6p form a heteromeric complex. ► The yeast Pex1p-Pex6p-complex is recruited to peroxisomes by Pex15p. ►The Pex1p-Pex6p-complex acts as dislocase for the peroxisomal import receptor Pex5p.
