Abstract
► Three genes encode hevein-like defense peptides WAMPs in the wheat Triticum kiharae. ► These genes are activated in response to biotic and abiotic stress. ► Wamp gene homologues are widely distributed across cereals and goatgrasses. ► WAMPs probably evolved from class I chitinases via deletion of the catalytic domain.
