Abstract
⺠Three genes encode hevein-like defense peptides WAMPs in the wheat Triticum kiharae. ⺠These genes are activated in response to biotic and abiotic stress. ⺠Wamp gene homologues are widely distributed across cereals and goatgrasses. ⺠WAMPs probably evolved from class I chitinases via deletion of the catalytic domain.
