Abstract
⺠Cholesterol is transformed in 24S-hydroxycholesterol (24OHC) by brain neurons. ⺠Almost all the plasma 24OHC in humans has brain origin. ⺠Plasma 24OHC depends by brain cholesterol turnover and liver elimination. ⺠Plasma 24OHC is reduced in neurodegenerative diseases proportionally to disease burden. ⺠Inconsistent results were found about plasma 24OHC in neurodegenerative diseases.
