► Neurons require nerve growth factor (NGF) for survival during hypoxia. ► Pericytes, abundantly present in the brain, can produce multiple neurotrophins. ► Brain pericytes increase neutrotrophin-3 production during hypoxia. ► Astrocytes respond to neutrotrophin-3 to increase NGF expression.
