Abstract
The peripheral venous catheters setting is a common practice in modern medicine but is still associated to infection. The aim of this study is to evaluate in our hospital the way the nurses set peripheral venous catheters and which medical devices they use. A prospective study was for this purpose conducted in March 2005 in certain care unit chosen according to their consumption volume in peripheral venous catheters. A total of 62 protocol forms were evaluated in 17 care units in a period of one month. Concerning the medical devices the results show that the nurses use, in 49% of the cases, sets and, in other cases, medical devices that are taken separately. The gloves used are sterile in 35% of the cases. During the antisepsy, the steps of rinsing and drying are not made in 25% of the cases and antiseptic are misused some times. We evaluated that the mean cost of one setting of peripheral venous catheter considering only the medical devices is 0.60 Euro tax-free in our establishment. Finally, this study will help the hospital workgroup in developing a complete protocol of peripheral venous catheter setting.
