Abstract
► Mutations in galE confer sensitivity to phage P1 in non-Typhimurium Salmonella. ► P1 can transfer large regions of DNA among serovars. ► Transduction is not hindered by coimmune prophages or endonucleases. ► Mutations in galE are easily repaired using a Δrfb donor strain. ► Phage P1 can be used for genetic manipulation of natural isolates of Salmonella.
