Abstract
Overall good health is essential to improve training and performance, especially for elite athletes. However, a high prevalence of oral diseases as dental caries, dental erosion or gingivitis has been observed in the professional sport community. Moreover, according to several studies, poor oral health leads to difficulties in eating and sleeping and has a negative impact on quality of life and self-confidence. Periodontal diseases such as periodontitis seem to induce systemic inflammation. Therefore, oral diseases in the sport community may also affect athletic performance or even have an impact on the systemic level and potentially influence the development of tendinopathies. This literature review aims to identify the incidence of oral diseases in elite athlete and highlight the impact of oral health on athletic performances. Furthermore, oral health preventive measures and risk mitigation interventions will be proposed.
