Abstract
Since the end of the nineteenth century, the concept of secularism has gradually imposed itself within French society without having unanimity on its precise meaning. In tension between fight and sometimes anticlerical secularism and secularism in dialogue with religions, this concept is source of passionate debates in our country. In this context, we sought to grasp its specificity by relying on its use throughout history, in order to situate it in the contemporary social landscape.
