ResumenEste estudio examina la manera en la que en Occidente fue necesario insertar el juego mesoamericano en un encadenamiento ininterrumpido de sus juegos, a la vez que analiza cómo la imagen del juego mesoamericano está tempranamente forjada sobre múltiples referencias vinculadas con los juegos del Renacimiento en Europa, los que, a su vez, tomaron como fundamento a la Antigüedad grecorromana.La contribución refiere a un corpus de imágenes del juego de pelota mesoamericano elaborado entre finales del siglo xvi y mediados del xx para determinar en qué medida las concepciones, ideas y prácticas europeas referentes a juegos de pelota determinaron la manera en la que se representa el juego mesoamericano.La búsqueda de las fuentes de inspiración de estas imágenes no está suficientemente estudiada, no obstante, con su uso recurrente en la historiografía dedicada al juego de pelota mesoamericano, en el estudio se intenta establecer la manera en la que sus creadores, artistas, formularon las convenciones para representarlo.

This study examines the way in which in the West inserted the Mesoamerican ballgame in an uninterrupted chain of its games, while it analyzes how the image of the Mesoamerican ballgame was forged on multiple references related to the games of the Renaissance in Europe, which in turn took Greco-Roman antiquity as a basis.A corpus of images of the Mesoamerican ball game developed between the late 16th century and mid-20th century are analyzed to determine to what extent European concepts, ideas and practices concerning ball games, determined the way in which the Mesoamerican game is represented.The sources of inspiration of these images have not been sufficiently studied, not withstanding their recurring use in the historiography devoted to the Mesoamerican ball game, and this study tries to establish the manner in which its creators, artists, conceived the conventions to represent it.
