A new tetradentate N4-coordinate ligand N,N-bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl-N2-phenylethane-1,2-diamine (bdpab) has been synthesized and characterized. Six new mononuclear mixed ligand complexes of the types [M(bdpab)(NCS)]Y [M = Cu(II) and Zn(II), Y = PF6−, ClO4−], [M′(bdpab)(NCS)2] [M′ = Co(II) and Ni(II)] have been synthesized by treating metal nitrate/perchlorate, tetradentate N4-coordinated ligand (bdpab), NCS− and PF6− ions using appropriate mole ratio and characterized by spectral and physico-chemical techniques. Crystal structures of four compounds [Cu(bdpab)(NCS)]ClO4, [Co(bdpab)(NCS)2], [Ni(bdpab)(NCS)2] and [Zn(bdpab)(NCS)]PF6 have been solved by single crystal X-ray crystallography studies. Structural analyses reveal copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes have five coordination with distorted square pyramidal [for copper(II)] or trigonal bipyramidal [for zinc(II)] geometry whereas Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes have distorted octahedral geometry.
