A new 2,6-di(anthracen-9-yl)pyridine ligand L reacts with various silver(I) salts to give three new complexes: mononuclear [AgL(NO3)] and [AgL(i-PrOH)2](BF4), and dinuclear [AgL(μ-H2O)AgL](BF4)2·3CH2Cl2. The complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. The solid state structures of the complexes have been determined by X-ray diffractometry. Methylene blue (MB) degradation was studied by UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The new complexes of silver(I) are active photocatalysts of MB degradation under sunlight irradiation.
