Abstract

The reactions of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, N3P3Cl6 (1), with 1,6-diaminohexane (2a) and 1,8-diaminooctane (2b), having long carbon chains, in acetonitrile have been investigated. The reactions gave three different types of products, whose structures have been characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy, viz. the triple-bridged compounds N3P3Cl3[NH(CH2)nNH]3N3P3Cl3 [n = 6 (a series); n = 8 (b series)] (3a, 3b), the mono-ansa compounds N3P3Cl4[NH(CH2)nNH] (4a, 4b) and the double-bridged compounds N3P3Cl4[NH(CH2)nNH]2N3P3Cl4, (5a, 5b). X-ray crystallographic studies confirmed the structures of the two ansa compounds (4a, 4b) and the meso-anti double-bridged compounds (5a, 5b). The results of both reactions were compared with previous work on the reaction of compound 1 with the same diamines (2a, 2b).
