Abstract

A series of ruthenium(II) complexes bearing hydroxypicolinato ligands was synthesized and characterized. The reaction of [Ru(NNN)(pic-6OH)Cl] (1), where NNN is 2,6-bis(dimethylamino)methylpyridine and featuring the 6-hydroxypicolinate ligand (pic-6OH), with KOtBu in acetonitrile produced [Ru(NNN)(CH3CN)(2-pyridonato)] (4), in which pic-6OH was converted into its pyridonato tautomer form. The pyridonato-ligated complex 4 reacts with HCl to quantitatively regenerate 1, thus the interconversion between the pyridinol and pyridonato forms of hydroxypicolinate was successfully achieved using a Ru(II) complex supported by the NNN-pincer ligand. The complexes [Ru(NNN)(pic-3OH)Cl] (2) and [Ru(NNN)(pic)Cl] (3) were also prepared and characterized for comparison.
