Abstract
The Mn(III)/Mn(IV) cluster [Mn16O16(OMe)6(OAc)16(MeOH)3(H2O)3] · 6H2O has an inner [Mn6IVO6(OMe)4]8+ mineral-like core structure surrounded by an outer, non-planar ring of 10 Jahn-Teller distorted Mn(III) atoms. Magnetic measurements show that it is a single-molecule magnet. A 1D Mn(III) material, [Mn(μ-OMe)(μ-OAc)2]n, also obtained when synthesising the Mn16 cluster, displays antiferromagnetic coupling without long-range order.
